Rose Byrne is set to play New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern in the upcoming movie They Are Us, which covers the terrifying mosque shootings in Christchurch two years ago.

According to Deadline, the film focuses on the aftermath of the attacks on New Zealand’s Muslim community, with Bryne stepping into the role of Ardern, who fearlessly comforted and led her nation through the tragedy on March 15, 2019.

The title, They Are Us, references the impactful speech the 40-year-old leader gave following the shootings, which killed 51 people and injured dozens more.

“Over the past two weeks we have heard the stories of those impacted by this terrorist attack,” Ardern said in her speech delivered weeks following the attacks.

“They were stories of bravery. They were stories of those who were born here, grew up here, or who had made New Zealand their home. Who had sought refuge, or sought a better life for themselves or their families.

“These stories, they now form part of our collective memories. They will remain with us forever. They are us.”

They Are Us is not so much about the attack but the response to the attack [and] how an unprecedented act of hate was overcome by an outpouring of love and support,” he told Deadline

“The film addresses our common humanity, which is why I think it will speak to people around the world. It is an example of how we should respond when there’s an attack on our fellow human beings.”
